How do I reset my password on the current Planning Portal site?

If you have forgotten your password, you can reset it by following the forgotten password process.

Simply click on the ‘sign in’ link at the top left of the screen, select the ‘Forgotten password?’ link and enter the email address that you used to register your Planning Portal account.

Your password will be automatically reset and sent to you by email. The reset password will be a series of letters and numbers that are case sensitive, therefore we strongly recommended that when you first log in, you cut and paste your password into the password field to prevent any errors.

If you have problems creating a new password, please refer to our guidance.

If you have not received the temporary password email, please check your junk or spam folders. If you still haven’t received this email, please contact the Planning Portal service desk and we will set it for you.

If you need further assistance, visit our help pages on the Planning Portal.

I’m having trouble creating a password

When creating a new password on the Planning Portal it must meet the password creation criteria:

  • The password must be between 8-50 characters in length
  • It must be a mix of upper- and lower-case letters
  • It must contain at least one non-alphabetic character
  • It must not contain commonly used words and or numeric sequences.

If you are using common words and run into difficulties when trying to create a password, try replacing alphanumeric characters with special characters.

When you have met the password creation criteria a green tick will appear under the field indicating that your chosen password is valid. Additionally, on the forgotten password sign in page you will be able to click on the eye icon in the new password field to see what you are typing.

You then need to re-enter this password exactly in the next field. Please note, you won’t be able to cut and paste from the create password field to the confirm or re-enter password field.

Please note: this advice applies to the current Planning Portal, there will be a different process for the new Planning Portal.

How do I retain a copy of my application that is over 2 years old

For draft applications

Log in to your Planning Portal account, open the application. Make a change to the application. This will save the change and our system will identify it as a recently accessed application.

For submitted, transferred or archived applications

To keep a copy of an application that was submitted two or more years ago, you will need to go to the ‘Transferred’ tab on your ‘My Applications’ page and click on ‘Download’ to save an offline copy.

If your application is in your ‘Archived’ list, you will need to unarchive it to download a copy of the full application, including supporting documents.

Please note that downloading, (un)archiving or opening an application for amendment without making a change will not count as a modification to the application.

Please do not make an amendment to your application, unless you intend to resubmit changes back to the council.

How do I download an application to keep as a record?

Submitted applications

You can download full copies of submitted applications via your Planning Portal account. Simply log in to your account here: https://auth.planningportal.co.uk/account/signin

Draft applications

You can download and print draft application forms from your Planning Portal account. This version of a draft form holds all of the information relevant to your application; however, we have made some key changes to the draft forms which render them invalid for submission to Local Authorities.

This version of the application has the following:

  • A full page ‘DRAFT’ watermark
  • Removal of the Local Authority’s logo
  • Removal of the declaration box
  • Removal of the agent’s details.

You can view an example of a draft application here.

To download or print a draft application form, you can log in to your account, navigate to your ‘My Planning Portal’ page and scroll down to the ‘My Applications’ section. From there, click on the name of the application you would like to print or download. On the next screen, you will see a box containing the application details and a box showing the application completion status. Scroll down this page, until you reach a box entitled ‘Form Download’. In this box, click the words ‘Download form’. This will give you a copy of the information you entered onto the application form.
