Despite a global pandemic, the market finished strong!

by on January 14, 2021

As we enter into 2021, our team here at the Planning Portal are shifting focus to the year ahead and the positive events we have to look forward to in the coming months. We are in the process of re-platforming the Planning Portal planning application system using insight from our stakeholders, in order to improve our service and implement new features and functions. Looking ahead to November, once again we will be hosting our annual conference. We are excited about the opportunities we have this year to work with our clients and with Local Authorities to drive digital innovation in the planning process and provide a nationwide implementation channel for new reform.

However, before we fully embrace 2021, we have taken an in depth look at the trends seen in the planning market throughout 2020. Our latest edition of the Planning Market Insight Report looks back at 2020 as a whole, reviewing the number of applications submitted as well as the impact that COVID-19 has had on submissions and the development market.

It is a phrase used too frequently in recent months, but 2020 truly was an unprecedented year. Despite the dramatic reduction of application submissions seen last spring, there were over 600,000 online applications submitted throughout 2020 – the highest levels in the last five years. The summer saw the largest ever number of submissions in one month, a trend that continued throughout the last six months of the year and we even saw 101 applications submitted on Christmas day! Across all regions, including Wales, there has been an increase in the number of applications submitted, with December’s planning application fees realising c.£35.5 million, a 17% increase on December 2019’s total of c£27.8m.

Also included in this latest issue:
• Application trends for 2020 vs 2019 – nationally, regionally and by application type
• The top 15 Local Planning Authorities which have seen the biggest change in application submissions in 2020
