Savills to Santander – generating efficiencies for business

In recent weeks we’ve pulled together a series of testimonials from corporate users of the online application service to highlight how it can generate efficiencies for businesses.

The case studies can be found in a new area of the website for users submitting applications in a professional capacity.

Here you will also find links to the latest government validation documents for planning applications, and a handy hints and tips section for making online applications.

Also included is an updated illustrated guide to registering as an agent administrator i.e. where you can check and manage applications made by other members of your team.

From Nanny State to Canny State!

I’m sure that for those who have spent all their career the Civil Service the current maelstrom is nothing new. A storm to be weathered before calm descends once more.
For those of us still fairly new to the scene (8 years in my case) all this uncertainty is at once disconcerting and exciting.
The Planning Portal is no stranger to uncertainty, having finally found our secure place in the Department, we now find ourselves like everyone else looking into an unclear future.
Whereas in the past we have managed well for funding and support we are now facing a more constrained outlook. I take this as a very clear remit to carefully scrutinise all we do, to ensure we are adding value where we can and paring back where we are not.

Dictionaries describe the word canny as “careful; prudent: astute; shrewd; frugal and thrifty” not bad adjectives to describe our current state of mind I think. Hence ‘Canny State’

This doesn’t mean that we will do nothing, quite the opposite. I believe that the Planning Portal has a central role to play in turning the Coalition Governments ambitions into reality. We occupy a unique position in the planning industry; working as we do with all sectors to facilitate innovation and drive efficiencies. We have a truly engaged audience that don’t mind telling us when we are getting it wrong or right)and we will seek to involve you in the decisions we take. Read more…

A thank you note to all the temps and consultants along the way

You will all be aware of the recent public commitment to cut back on the use of temps and consultants to support Government work. We have been anticipating this development and for some time have been winding down our supporting resources.

In a few days time our last remaining “temps” will leave us and as they do I thought I would reflect for a moment on the contribution they and their predecessors have made to the Portals success. Read more…

50 Best Websites

“There I was sat in a café, sipping a coffee when I happened to pick up a newspaper supplement” That was how John our erstwhile technical PM and occasional super striker explained away why he was reading the Telegraph.

Anyhow I’m delighted he did, as to his and our surprise there sat cosily amidst a list of the 50 Best Websites was the Planning Portal, alongside Internet giants such as eBay, The BBC and Youtube.

The Planning Portal was the only Government website in the list and featured in the category – Best Home websites.

The list was published in their Weekend supplement (Saturday May 22nd) and online.

Just wait ‘till they see the redesign!

Portal Supporting Business

You might be interested to know that we have re-jigged our Regional Account Management team (commonly referred to as RAMs) for 2010/11.

Rather than operating as a single team offering a broad range of support across LPAs and Agents we have decided to focus our team in order to deliver better more defined results. As a result we now have a RAM and a CAM team.
The RAMs will offer suport to LPAs and the CAMs (the C is for corporate) will support businesses.

At the moment the CAM team are focusssing their not inconsiderable talents on helping convert from paper to electronic applications businesses who submit planning applications very regularly. They are especially focussing on companies with several offices who may perhaps have adopted e-planning in some but not all their locations.
That said the team would be delighted to hear from any business that may need support e-enabling.

Our Objectives for 2010-11

The following sets out our objectives and focus for the coming year assuming no major change in either Government policy or funding. Clearly if that happens I will redraft and publish as soon as possible.

We will:

• continue to ensure our existing infrastructure enables citizens and communities to engage in planning.

• continue to drive increased numbers to submit planning applications electronically, aiming for 50-60% of all applications online by March 2011.

• focus our technical resources on improving and simplifying 1APP for both business and citizen users.

• deliver Portal 2 our full redesign in Summer and as a consequence audit and prune the vast amount of content on the site.

• use our new functionality to encourage private sector partners to develop tools and services to support planning improvement.

• work with DirectGov to improve planning information for citizens.

• continue to support and encourage take-up of the e-Consultation Hub.

And finally

Recognising the constraints on public funding, we will seek to generate around £1M in revenue this year, increasing over time to become self-sufficient through value-added services and partnerships that will ensure that core services remain free for all.

Portal helps elephants march through London

While we’re never ones to blow our own trumpet (only joking), I thought I’d tell you how the Portal has played its part in a major marketing campaign that has seen more than 200 painted elephant sculptures hit the streets of London.

London-based charity www.elephantfamily.org used the Planning Portal’s online service to submit applications to place 258 painted elephants all over the capital.

The campaign, which runs between May and July, aims to raise awareness about the endangered Asian elephant.

While We Were Away Part 3 – Anglian Home Improvements receives award

Anglian Home Improvements began using the Portal’s online planning application system shortly after it launched in 2004 in a bid to reduce the time spent on long-winded postal applications.

It became the first large company to commit to submitting all of its planning applications online and earlier in the year passed the 5,000 application mark.

While we were away Part 2 – Mini-guide to Conservatories launched

We recently launched the latest in our series of visual walk-throughs of popular household building projects, in England. The Mini-guide to Conservatories can now be found on the Portal alongside the existing guides: Extensions, Loft Conversions, Outbuildings and Porches
