1960s Petrol stations given listed status

by on May 10, 2012

Nothing to do with the Portal but interesting nonetheless.

Two petrol station canopies in Red Hill and Markham Moor off the A1 are to be listed.

They remind me of  the Thunderbirds, I can just imagine Parker pulling up in the Rolls to fill up with 4 star at tuppence a gallon.

I remember clearly the price of the first petrol I ever bought in 1960 – it was 3 shillings and 3d per gallon. Around 16.25p per gallon I reckon, or say 3.61p per litre. Mind you, in those days you could buy a pint of beer, 2 cinema tickets ….. etc

I am sure the canopy can be made in to a lovely feature.

Have you seen Men in Black recently? The discs at Red Hill are probably alien spacecraft, cunningly disguised in plain sight…
