Government loans available to make your home more sustainable

by on April 19, 2024

Do you believe that your house, or the property that you live in, could benefit from any of the energy-saving improvements listed below?

  • Double glazing
  • Energy efficient lighting
  • Floors or wall insulation
  • Draught-proofing
  • Upgraded heating
  • Solar panel installation

If so, you may be eligible for financial assistance via the government’s Green Deal loan scheme.

Getting assessed

The eligibility of your home for Green Deal assistance can be checked by a Green Deal assessor.

Green Deal assessors can be contacted directly, or located via a Green Deal provider.

These assessments may be accompanied by a fee, which will be disclosed by the assessor in advance. The assessor will ask some key information of you both prior to and during the visit.

After the visit

You’ll receive an advice report which will detail the energy performance of your current home (in the form of an Energy Performance Certificate), with any recommended changes and an estimate of potential cost savings.

Paying for the changes

Following the assessment, there will be several options for getting the work done and paying for it.

You may choose to pay for the changes yourself, without utilising government financial assistance. In this case, you may still be able to use a Green Deal provider to arrange the work.

Financial assistance to make the suggested changes is however available using a Green Deal finance plan. This financial plan can only be used if the changes were recommended by the Green Deal assessment.

The amount of finance you receive is based on the expected savings on your energy bills and as such, any annual repayments of the loan should not exceed the savings you’d otherwise make on your energy bills.

You can find out more about how this loan works by visiting the government website.

Further information on the Green Deal, as well as comprehensive information on other financial support schemes offered by the government, is available on our website.
