Sustainable development at the National Planning Conference 2023
The recent National Planning Conference, hosted in collaboration between Planning Portal and the Royal Town Planning Institute, was a hub of lively discussion around the most pertinent topics in planning today – most notably, climate change.
The concept of sustainable development was high on everyone’s agenda – with a session specifically dedicated to discussing sustainable development on the first day of the conference, chaired by Grant Findlay of Sir Robert McAlpine.
Panellists of the session included Iain Jenkinson from CBRE, Martin Cooper from Prologis, Patrick Robinson from Burgess Salmon and Sarah Scannell from Birmingham City Council.
The group discussed various facets of sustainable development, pondering how the UK planning system supports sustainability, and what could still be done to help the built environment sectors achieve net zero ambitions. The floor was then opened for a lively Q&A session.
Between keynote and panel sessions, there was ample opportunities for networking, giving delegates the chance to hear more from exhibitors about the products and services which aim to help the planning industry hit its sustainability ambitions.

On the second day of the National Planning Conference, delegates were treated to a session on the concept of planning around the world, featuring international guests, chaired by Wei Yang from Wei Yang & Partners, with a focus on how planning is treated globally and how approaches in other countries compare to those in the UK – with an emphasis on different approaches to sustainable planning.

Wei Yang was joined by Angela Brooks of the American Planning Association, Niall Cussen of the Office of the Planning Regulator, Sabina Dimitriu from ISOCARP and Will Steel from the Commonwealth Association of Planners.
